Built in the early 17th century, the bridge was designed in a Baroque style, with delicate stonework and intricate carvings. It connects the Doge's Palace to the city’s historic prison, allowing prisoners to cross over the Rio di Palazzo canal before facing sentencing. The bridge earned its name from the legend that prisoners would sigh as they glimpsed their last view of Venice’s beauty through its windows before losing their freedom.
In my drawing, I wanted to capture the intricacy of the bridge’s carvings and the stillness of the canal’s stone walls. There is a bittersweet contrast between the bridge’s somber purpose and the free-flowing water below. This interplay of freedom and confinement moved me, and I hoped to express that tension in this piece.
